our answers to your questions

Do I need a visa for Madagascar ?

Yes, visa is compulsory for all foreign travelers. IT IS FREE IN 2011
You get it on arrival in Antananarivo airport. There is a desk for that.
You show your passport (6 months validity after return) + return ticket flight. No more documents requested.

It is possible to get visa at Malagasy Consulate in foreign countries, check on : http://ambassade-madagascar.fr/site/

How about international flights ?

Malagasy Tours is a local tour company. We do not deal international flights.
Travelers buy international flight ticket themselves via internet or a travel agency.
For more information note that there are three companies using this destination :
Air Madagascar the national company --  www.airmadagascar.com
Air France -- www.airfrance.fr
Corsair --  www.corsairfly.com
It is more interesting for you to deal with your international flights, you will often find better price on internet than we would offer you.
You should get repatriation insurance for your trip if you pay with credit card. Please contact your bank for more informations.

Shall I take one or more domestic flights ?

Almost every trip in Madagascar has at least one domestic flight.
Only Air Madagascar works on domestic Air network. Malagasy Tours will book and issue your internal ticket flight without commission on your demand.
Get information about flights and prices on www.airmadagascar.com
Note that Air Madagascar give 50 % discount on domestic flights if you travel with the company from Paris or Marseille.
But note that some of our tour makes a loop from Antananarivo and back, so there is no need to fly! Check suggestions on this website.

Shall I bring cash ?

Yes, bring Euro which you should change into Ariary (Ar) Malagasy currency when you arrive at the airport. Tour guide is there to help you.
Shops generally do not accept Euro except in some rare handcraft or big hotels shops.
You can gradually change in banks as you go along the trip, but be aware that banks procedures are slow and tedious.
NB: banks are closed about week end

Can I use cash card ?

It is just so rare for the moment. Cash card is almost unknown except in big hotels or important shops.
There are cash machines which are not sure to work when you need it because of power or connection failure. It can be a big problem in case of emergency.
VISA is the most common card, MASTERCARD and others are quite rare.
In conclusion, bring some cash, credit card is just a backup tool.

What about my insurance ?

In "The price does not include" at the end of program there is ‘insurance’. This is your personal insurance for repatriation, it is compulsory to have it. Malagasy Tours have a civil and professional insurance, all our vehicles are insured.

About tipping … how it works ?

Tipping is not institutionalized and even less compulsory in Madagascar.
In our opinion, it should depend on your satisfaction and the service you get.
Here are some recommendation rates per couple to help you;
tip for a hotel porter is around 1 000 Ar  (less than 0,5 €)
tip for a restaurant waiter: +/- 10% of the bill
tip for a Park local guide: 10 000 Ar a day (around 4 €)
tip for a Park porter: 5 000 Ar a day (around 2 €)
tip for a tour guide: 20 000 Ar a day (around 8 €)

Instructions about health ?

There are no compulsory vaccines to go in Madagascar, no document needed. Vaccine against yellow fever is nevertheless recommended by most health organizations. Take anti-malaria treatment. Consult your doctor for the choice of medicines. Bring basic medicines kit.
If you don’t want to bring it back, our staff will give it to dispensaries.

Nice and warm weather ????

…not always, not all year long and not everywhere anyway …it varies actually!  Madagascar weather is like this in a few words:
1/ from December to March: it is the rainy season – travelling is possible avoiding camping and rough roads.
2/ from April to November: dry season, better condition to travel.

more details ?

- From April to mid-June is after rain season, the country is green, rice fields in water and harvest season so it is beautiful - Excellent condition to travel.
- mid-June, July and August: austral winter – cool weather and often cloudy morning in the highlands. No rain and nice weather in the coast.
- watch out: often rain in east coast and Ste Marie in June and July because of monsoon.
- September, October and November have good conditions to travel, it is getting hotter as the season changes. It is very hot in the coast after mid-October.

Nights are often cool in the highlands, bring a good pull over.
It is cold in altitude (Antsirabe, Andringitra) during winter.
When camping, bring fleece sweatshirt and anorak for high altitudes and good sleeping bag for the night.
East coast always benefits more humid weather than the rest of the country.

Do I need my mobile phone ?

Why not? Madagascar has now mobile phone infrastructure (Orange, Airtel and Telma). You can keep your own chip card but the roaming cost is very expensive, or you can buy a local one with prepaid credit which is cheaper. Ask information to your mobile company.
Phone cards are available all over the country so you can call abroad from a phone box.

What information about my lungage ?

Very important: if you have a connecting flight in Paris from other town or country, you absolutely need to collect your luggage and do the check-in again for Antananarivo, it is annoying but more reliable! It often happens to lose luggage in France airport, to get it back when it finally arrive in Antananarivo and send it to you on your trip is always long and complicated.
